Title: SQL Database Administrator - Remote

Location: Remote

Duration: 5 Months (Contract to Hire)

Job Summary

Serve as a SQL Database Administrator, responsible for managing and maintaining SQL Server databases, implementing and managing database backup and recovery strategies, collaborating with development teams to support database-related tasks, perform database performance tuning and optimization.

Principal Accountabilities

(Typical duties include the following, although specific duties vary by assignment or contract.)

  • Manage, monitor, and maintain Microsoft SQL Server databases to ensure high availability and reliability.
  • Optimize database performance through indexing, query tuning, and system resource management.
  • Develop and implement database backup, recovery, and disaster recovery strategies.
  • Plan and execute database and server upgrades, patches, and migrations with minimal downtime.
  • Implement security measures, including encryption, authentication, and auditing, to protect data.
  • Work closely with developers, system administrators, and business analysts to support application development and troubleshooting.
  • Utilize monitoring tools to proactively identify and resolve performance and reliability issues.
  • The client is consolidating 6 data centers into 2 (VA and DFW), and client have 1200 databases that need to be migrated, and another 800 that are to be owned by this team.
  • This is NOT a Development DBA.
  • Writing some scripts (PowerShell) is helpful.
  • Building clusters, performing backups (backups are made using Commvault),
  • Ideally, some Windows Server Administration in the past would be great (or knowledge would be great)
  • Cloud Experience: This is helpful, but not a hard requirement.
  • SSIS and SSRS Deploying packages (not building them)
  • SQL Server Versions: Upgrading everything from 2012 to 2022.
  • DBA Team Size: 2 (Jason and an Oracle DBA, who is trained to do SQL DBA)
  • Redgate is being used for monitoring (if client have it, it would be helpful)
  • Experience Required: 3 to 5 years of DBA or more with configuration, troubleshooting
  • Overkill Someone extremely heavy on the development side is a NO (client have Development DBAs already, and this is not a Dev DBA role).
  • Growth Today, Jason has a Server, a DBA, a Networking team, etc. There certainly are leadership opportunities to run these teams down the lane.

Knowledge & Skills

  • Knowledge and skills may vary by system assignment.
  • Expertise in SQL Server (2017/2019/2022) installation, configuration, administration, maintenance, and optimization.
  • Experience with Always-On Availability Groups, Clustering, and Replication.
  • Hands-on experience in database backup, restore, and disaster recovery planning.
  • Proficiency in SQL Server Profiler, Performance Monitor, and Extended Events.
  • Knowledge of SSIS and SSRS
  • Understanding and experience of cloud-based databases (Azure, etc.) is a plus.
  • Proficient in completing daily assignments and project activities with great attention to detail and a high degree of accuracy.
  • Excellent analytical and critical thinking skills, good judgment, and an ability to act decisively.

Experience & Education

  • 5-7 years of experience as a Database Administrator in a production environment.
  • Experience with the Windows operating system is a plus
  • Experience with VMware is a plus
  • Experience with Postgres and MySQL is a plus

Physical Requirements/Working Environment

  • Extended hours of computer use.
