In partnership with the NYC public school system, NYC Outward Bound Schools is a non-profit organization that serves over 28,000 students in almost 80 schools across the five boroughs of New York City. The organization’s staff serves NYC young people by leading students in outdoor adventure programming and through the coaching of their educators to increase adventurous learning within the classroom; in both settings, fostering opportunities for social emotional academic development (SEAD). 


Role Summary:

The Instructional Coach supports a portfolio of schools in implementing and improving Key Practices for Instruction for Deeper Learning, our vision for how classrooms can be joyful, equitable and immersive. The Instructional Coach supports instruction, professional learning, curriculum development, and continuous improvement practices and processes within the coaching team and across a portfolio of schools, with the aim to support student growth in achievement and social, emotional and academic development (SEAD). The Instructional Coach builds the capacity of teachers and school leaders to foster conditions for success and supports teachers to implement the key practices of deeper learning. This position is a full-time role reporting to the Director of the Instruction for Deeper Learning Pathway and is a part of a team of coaches who support the organization’s school-based programming.  


Essential Functions:

  • Support a network of schools implementing Instruction for Deeper Learning key practices in support of social, emotional and academic development (SEAD) of young people
  • Provide ongoing in-person and virtual coaching and support to teachers and leaders throughout the year around:
    • Fostering conditions for success, including building the capacity of school staff to set and monitor goals, give and collect feedback  and build a sense of collective efficacy across the school 
    • Integrating deeper learning into curriculum, daily instruction and assessments, including creating project based learning units, designing performance based tasks and developing engaging and challenging daily lesson
  • Co-plan and deliver school year and summer professional learning for teachers both within schools and across the pathway connected to Instruction for Deeper Learning 
  • Build and maintain strong coaching relationships with educators, school leaders, and other stakeholders 
  • Create and curate resources and tools for coaching and Deeper Learning
  • Participate in the Coaching team arc of learning and engage fully in the team's theory of action for improving educational equity in our partner schools, using a continuous improvement framework, both internally and externally, to understand impact of Instruction for Deeper Learning  
  • Facilitate the collection, analysis, and response to schools’ participation and impact data within ones’ portfolio
  • Support other projects designed to improve equity and impact as needed 
  • Participate in external and internal professional development opportunities and support structures 
  • Center a commitment to equity and anti-racism in all communications, decisions, and initiative
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Hold a strong commitment to educational equity for BIPOC youth, diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Demonstrate a dedication to our core values of community, courage, equity, integrity, and learning throughout all aspects of their work
  • Demonstrate a passion for our mission and supporting New York City schools, their youth and educators.
  • A minimum of five (5) years of relevant experience in a K-12 school or an organization supporting K-12 schools
  • Demonstrate understanding of the principles of adult learning
  • Content knowledge and pedagogical expertise in at least two of the following areas: culturally responsive teaching and learning, project-based learning, supporting diverse learners, literacy, and social-emotional learning
  • Ability to travel to and from schools in any of the 5 boroughs in NYC
  • Successful completion of NYC Public Schools Background Check will be required 
  • Ability to build trust, work collegially, and achieve influence across a wide range of diverse stakeholders.

  • Ability to be flexible, work independently, prioritize, plan, and multi-task
  • Outstanding organization, judgment and problem-solving capabilities
  • Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal; experience and skill in public speaking Excellent digital literacy skills, including but not limited to Microsoft Office and Google.

Location:

  • Hybrid position: Requires in person work that includes multiple days a week in schools located in different boroughs in NYC and on site in our Long Island City office, as outlined in the organization’s remote work policy.
